Was Christianity The Causal Agent For Individualism?

FREEDOMFEST 2010 “The Importance of Christianity to Western Civilization”

“Christianity was the primary reason this one small section of the Eurasian land mass exploded into an unprecedented five centuries of creativity called the Renaissance. The basic Christian premise that all human individuals are invited into a personal relationship with God and that all individuals are equal in God’s sight was a revolutionary idea. No other religion and no other society had ever said that. Thomas Aquinas was chiefly responsible for transforming Christianity into the kind of individualist belief system that had such a major impact on the West. It was Aquinas who said that it is pleasing to God for us to explore the mysteries of this universe and understand them and to create great works of beauty.

Along with that, two additional ideas gave the West a huge advantage over the rest of the world. One was autonomy—the notion that one can act efficaciously as an individual was also a Christian contribution unique to the West. The second is the Christian idea that each individual had been put on this earth for a purpose, which was a terrific motivator for creative elites. This was distinctive to Christianity. The origins of the scientific method also grew as an accumulation of all this.

The stonemasons created artistic works which were placed where they would never be seen by anyone. When they created those works, the stonemasons claimed that they were carving “for the eye of God.” A great deal of the inspiration of creative elites—people who devote themselves to creating great works, whether in science or the arts—reflects the kind of passion eloquently expressed as “carving for the eye of God.”

Without the influence of Christianity, ideas such as individualism, rights and autonomy would not have developed in the West. In fact, these were ideas which never developed anywhere else except in the West. Individualist ideas are distinctively a Western creation, and all of them evolved as the direct causal influence of Christianity.

The Greeks laid the foundation, but they did not have the concept of individualism. The Greeks and Aristotle predated the concept of individualism as it developed in the West.

As to science and mathematics, non-Western societies such as China did come up with scientific insights, but their scientific knowledge was hampered because they never developed the scientific method, which was an outgrowth of these individualist ideas. The reason we developed the scientific method in the West is complicated, but much of it has to do with the Western idea of individualism. In Asia, there is much less willingness to stand up and say ‘I’m right and you’re wrong’—and to argue it out—which is the essence of how the scientific method got started.

Human achievement, especially in the sciences, is fostered by the kind of individuality which motivates people to fight things out, to stand up and say, “I am right and you are wrong, and we will fight this out to the end.’ In Asia, that is a very alien way of looking at things. Christianity had advantages which other religions such as Confucianism and Taosim did not in terms of developing the scientific method.

Religion’s role in fostering the development of Western civilization has been huge and constructive. Specifically with respect to the scientific method, there was a critical turning point in the accumulation of human knowledge in which Christianity was the direct causal agent.”

Yarbrough And Peoples Turn Out Encino Eatery

Alisa Peoples(Yarbrough)

In what was a post funeral service gathering  for Gap Band bass player Robert Wilson, Yarbrough And Peoples joined the house band and turned it out with energy and excitement. “It was not only good to hear that voice from back in the day, but to see them take the stage enthusiastic to play.”Yarbrough & Peoples

Both played multiple instruments with the intention of taking it higher and they did.  Said one patron: “Alisa Peoples took the stage trying to play everything she could and was rocking it like she was in church!”  He went on to say: “(Cavin) Yarbrough took over one keyboard, while Peoples grabbed a mic. Next thing I know they had switched and she was funkin’ up a bottom bass line.”

Stevie’s Creole Cafe & Bar, located at 16911 Ventura Blvd Encino, CA 91316 34.1595

Lead singer of house band stated several times that this weekly event is on a trial basis and he respectfully solicited our support. Several vocalists (soulful black females singing R&B) from the audience did cover solos.

Ex Gap Band percussionist Victor Orlando was upfront delivering monster solos the whole night and took vocal lead and MC duties later in the evening.

Video footage to be posted soon.

Obama’s Religion Questioned, Whitehouse Vows He’s Christian

President Barack Obama’s religion is being questioned, or at least the news media is reporting that it is being questioned by many Americans. A new poll showed that nearly one in five people, or 18 percent, believe Obama is Muslim. That was up from 11 percent who said so in March 2009.

Obama Religion Poll On CNN

What is startling is the candid matter of fact attitude that being Christian is acceptable. The Whitehouse released a statement reinforcing what has been said already about the President’s beliefs. The statement claims President Obama prays daily.Kirbyjon Caldwell On CNN

The majority of Americans who are Christian may not even realize how offensive this is to those who don’t hold their beliefs. For those of us with “no faith” this dialogue can be irksome. However, the ongoing open discussion of religion may expose the flaws,  short-comings and conflicts that lie within religious tradition.

Franklin Graham, Pasor Kirbyjon Caldwell and others are being called on by the news networks to comment on the President’s faith. In their attempt to talk rationally about faith, which is an abstract thing, they may be exposing the  inconsistencies within and between religions.

Sarah Palin Defends Conservatives (Full Text Of Facebook Article)

Sarah Palin continues her defense of conservatives and of Dr. Laura Schlessinger in a recent post to the “Notes” section of her Facebook page. She also sent a link to the article to her millions of Twitter fans. Below is the full text of the article.

Defending the Fight to Cast off a Conservative’s “Shackles”

by Sarah Palin on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 2:17pm

Does anyone seriously believe that Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a racist? Anyone, I mean, who isn’t already accusing all conservatives, Republicans, Tea Party Americans, etc., etc., etc. of being racists?

Adversaries who have been trying to silence Dr. Laura for years seized on her recent use of the n-word on her show as she subsequently suggested that rap “artists” and other creative types like those producing HBO shows who regularly use the n-word could be questioned for doing so. Her intention in discussing the issue with a caller seeking advice was not to be hateful or bigoted. Though she did not mean to insult the caller, she did, and she apologized for it. Still, those who oppose her seized upon her mistake in using the word (though she didn’t call anyone the derogatory term) to paint her as something that she’s not. I can understand how she could feel “shackled” by those who would parse a single word out of decades of on-air commentary. I understand what she meant when she declared that she was “taking back my First Amendment rights” by turning to a new venue that will not allow others the ability to silence her by going after her stations, sponsors, and supporters.

I, and obviously many others, have been “shackled” too by people who play games with false accusations, threats, frivolous lawsuits, misreporting, etc., in an effort to silence those with whom they disagree. That’s why I tend to defend people who call it like they see it while others stop at nothing to shut them up. I learned this valuable lesson when the partisan obstructionists in my state tried to shackle, bankrupt, and destroy my family and supporters, and my record, with endless frivolous litigation when I returned from the Vice Presidential campaign trail. In order to shake off the shackles they wanted to paralyze us with, I handed the reins to another, much like Dr. Laura is doing, so that these obstructionists who hated a Commonsense Conservative agenda wouldn’t win. I didn’t retreat; I reloaded in order to fight for what is right on a fairer battlefield. So, more power to someone with good intentions who refuses to be shackled by their detractors when they are falsely accused of being racist.

Dr. Laura did not call anyone or any group of people the n-word. Curiously, the same criers over this issue didn’t utter a word when White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel called a group protesting the Obama Administration’s actions, “f***ing retards.” When this presidential spokesman uttered this term I commented that the President would be better off not including Emmanuel in his circle of advisers, and my opinion was based not just on the crude and disrespectful term Emmanuel used to label people, but because he too often gives the President very poor advice. I was called intolerant and narrow-minded by many on the Left for commenting on that issue. Many of these same Leftists are now spinning the Dr. Laura  issue into something it is not. As usual, their hypocrisy and double standard applications are glaring.

Last Combat Troops Leave Iraq

Keith Oberman interupted normal MSNBC programming with breaking news that the last combat troops were in the process of leaving Iraq. MSNBC’s exclusive coverage included Richard Engel who was embedded with troops in the final caravan.

50,000 personnel remain in Iraq in what is defined as the “Training” phase of the mission.  They are not intended for combat.

“NBC News: The last U.S. combat forces are about to cross the border into Kuwait, bringing to a close nearly 7½ years of a war that overthrew Saddam Hussein, forever defined the presidency of George W. Bush and left more than 4,400 American service members dead. ”

At roughly 7:19pm EST Keith Oberman noted the time when the embedded correspondent Richard Engel crossed the border and its symbolic importance.

CNN and FOX News lag in coverage of this event and did not report on it until 30 minutes after MSNBC. Rachel Maddow commented on how exclusive this assignment was for MSNBC.

Long Beach Funkfest 2010 Recap

jefferytv coverage of Long Beach Funkfest 2010 (August 8th) began upon our arrival around 12:15pm with the start of the Orgone set on the smaller Chico stage.  Fanny Franklin led a cover of  Funkadelic’s “Cosmic Slop” to close their set in tribute to P-Funk legend Garry Shider. Guitarist Arik Marshall was spotted in the early festival crowd.

The festival had 2 stages on the promenade amongst the many open businesses and vendor tables. But if there was an issue with this years event it would be the narrow path alley way between stages and lack of signs for direction. (I felt weird asking the events MC Vincent where the other stage was as he walked by). More than one music  promoter expressed concerns that guests would arrive at one stage when the crowd and entertainment was at the other and be unsatisfied. However this minor detail did not seem to diminish the large crowd or the mood of this event as it was packed and very joyous.

Rickey Vincent was the MC and kept things moving with his funktified crowd direction and tasteful commercial efforts.

The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown is a musical project which utilizes  musicians from many bands including  George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars. Minutes after Orgone, they kicked it up on the Armarillo (main) stage with P-Funk Allstar Saxophonist Greg Thomas amongst the several horns. With Bobby Easton, the event’s originator and driving force, on guitar vocalists Rev. Desmond D’Angelo (The Soular System), Novena Carmel (Babystone), Patryce “Choc’let” Banks (Graham Central Station), Norwood Fisher (Fishbone, Trulio Disgracias) joined in to perform a rousing extended version of the Parliament’s “Testify.” A cover of The Soular System’s “Hot Sauce” was followed by Funkadelic’s “I Bet Ya” with Norwood Fisher on bass.  Patryce “Choc’let” Banks took the lead and the band really got it moving with a Graham Central Station hit. Novena Carmel also stepped forward to lead a spirited cover of  Sly Stone’s “Sing A Simple Song.”

Back to the Chico stage where Lonnie Marshall’s project LiL Big Ups opened the set for the Marshall led Weapon Of Choice which consisted of DeWayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight on guitar and Phillp “D” Fish on drums along with regular members Spankie Valentine, Elizabeth Lea and Mark Cross.   Norwood Fisher (the drummer’s brother) joined W.O.C.  and dropped a rap on “Count Mackuluv.” This ensembles version of the closer “Highperspice” was said to be as tight as “gnat booty.”

The Original Stone City Band took the main stage next taking no prisoners. With their lead singer from Youngstown, Oh who resembles the late Rick James down to the braids and mustache, the Buffalo crew performed Punk Funk classics “Give It To Me Baby,” “Mary Jane,” “You and I” and a very ballsy “Fire & Desire” which had comical crowd interaction as the singer searched for a female to serenade.  The female vocal of this song was left undone and this anthem was performed with much respect to those that came before it.  The lead singer “pulled it off” and this energy flowed right into the closing hit “Super Freak.” Though it was early, The Original Stone City Band left it tore up and the crowd screaming as a nice little message to the headliner.

Would “Punk Funk” turn out “P-Funk” and be the talk of LBFF 2010? With the P-Funk Allstars touring Europe can these P-Funk players hold their own with the “Ladies Of P-Funk” as headliners?
