bbslist.textfiles.com shows evidence of the earliest beginings of PFUNK1.COM. P-funk Online the BBS was a dial-up bulletin board used to share information and for social networking. BBS’ existed before what we know as the internet and e-mail. Users would use their computers and modems to dial-in to a BBS that would store messages and allow its users to communicate with each other in various ways. P-Funk Online shared information about the group Parliament Funkadelic “P-funk” and about it’s system operator who later became known as “PFUNK1.”
“The computer was in my bedroom and had to always be on. At first I had it set to hear the modem on every call. Getting my geek on I could watch people login and navigate my board and that was very exciting” says PFUNK1. “I would post my number and theme on other BBS’ and a few magazines and word actually got around. I had a few loyal users!”
After a few years BBS technology gave way to national online services such as Prodigy and Compuserve. P-Funk Online made the transistion and “PFO” was one of the first to drop funk there too.
I posted to Facebook:
“i’m startin a holiday that encourages “self-time” where people celebrate with each other by being alone.”
several replies to the post led to the below:
F.L.I.N.T. HOLIDAY APRIL 23RD
Conceived by Jeffery Mitchell & Gerald DeCosta
Is there a holiday where we celebrate alone time?
Like a day for self-reflection without the involvement of others?
FLINT
Forever Living In Neutral Thoughts…
It’s that time of the year to empty out positive and negative thoughts to make room for neutral ones. In the FLINT Holiday, we spark ourselves into a day livicated for each of us (individually, because although we’re one, we’re not the same) to exercise the angels of selflessness while exorcising the demons of selfishness. April 1st is the Fool’s Day; 23 is a cosmic trigger day—a glorious day for meditation, Self-Reflecting, Self-Remembering and Self-Realization. Let’s get Fred, Sly and Rosetta and get lifted back into the stoned-age with our reptilian brain. Freak out in a stone-age daydream oh yeah!
Each year, throughout the days of our lives, we accumulate and identify with our thoughts (both positive and negative). Attached as we are to our thoughts we cling to them whether they are serving our innermost desires or not. FLINT allows us to reset our thoughts and recalibrate our heart to the rhythm of the One. A day honored to Self-time allows us to clean out the grime of fragmented and half-baked thoughts, feelings and emotions. Our feelings need a bath sometimes otherwise our thoughts become toxic and vice versa. FLINT is a Day set aside to uplift ourselves (mind, body and spirit) through a display of selfless gratitude for the gift of our lives, in our lives and through our lives. We are not for against the clouds that pass by in our mental sky…we just sit back reflect and watch them form and go bye-bye.
Its raining in Los Angeles for the 4th straight day. It has me in a mood, not a “bad” mood but a mellow sedate reflective one. One that is good for hibernating. Things are going well for me so to speak as “well” is very relative. Some people would surely say I was not doing well, even though I’m happy. Happy, yet not content. Which can be a good thing…
One cool thing I have verified is the quality of Sirrus Satelite Radio station “The Heat.” I had listened to it before when I had a rental and it was good, real good. I hadn’t heard quality R&B in so long I thought it did not exist anymore. Flowing, smooth, funky, syncopated, harmonized the way only black americans can do it. The key here is that the music is modern and being made by the “kids” of today. It has progressed as music should have from one era to the next and it feels up to date. Even the subject matter is a major improvement over what we call “mainstream” R&B.
I love me some Enterprise Rent-a-car. Walking distance from my house and $34 weekend (Fri-Sun) specials make my life so much more exciting and accessible. That and public transportation has been a pleasant lifestyle change. If only temporary.
WE WANT THE FUNK!! There are times when life gets going good and I get caught up in it and dont stop to write, film or document anything. That wouldn’t be such a “bad” thing except that I am supposed to be “jefferyTV” and I’m at events not writing about them. Especially P-funk events where I just loose my mind! It’s a very fine line between business and pleasure when dealing with the funk! ( a non-profit org). I say all that as pennance for all the funky events and happenings I wish I would have written about. One of which is the George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic show at Yoshi’s in San Francisco. Talk about a party!
Also I also was on the radio! KTYM AM 1460 in Inglewood, Ca. Discussing atheism and religion in the black community with Dr. Sikivu Hutchinson. It was cool and I was eventually very comfortable being on the air.
