A Self Reflection Holiday Takes Shape

I posted to Facebook:
“i’m startin a holiday that encourages “self-time” where people celebrate with each other by being alone.”

several replies to the post led to the below:

F.L.I.N.T. HOLIDAY APRIL 23RD
Conceived by Jeffery Mitchell & Gerald DeCosta

Is there a holiday where we celebrate alone time?
Like a day for self-reflection without the involvement of others?

FLINT

Forever Living In Neutral Thoughts…

It’s that time of the year to empty out positive and negative thoughts to make room for neutral ones. In the FLINT Holiday, we spark ourselves into a day livicated for each of us (individually, because although we’re one, we’re not the same) to exercise the angels of selflessness while exorcising the demons of selfishness. April 1st is the Fool’s Day; 23 is a cosmic trigger day—a glorious day for meditation, Self-Reflecting, Self-Remembering and Self-Realization. Let’s get Fred, Sly and Rosetta and get lifted back into the stoned-age with our reptilian brain. Freak out in a stone-age daydream oh yeah!

Each year, throughout the days of our lives, we accumulate and identify with our thoughts (both positive and negative). Attached as we are to our thoughts we cling to them whether they are serving our innermost desires or not. FLINT allows us to reset our thoughts and recalibrate our heart to the rhythm of the One. A day honored to Self-time allows us to clean out the grime of fragmented and half-baked thoughts, feelings and emotions. Our feelings need a bath sometimes otherwise our thoughts become toxic and vice versa. FLINT is a Day set aside to uplift ourselves (mind, body and spirit) through a display of selfless gratitude for the gift of our lives, in our lives and through our lives. We are not for against the clouds that pass by in our mental sky…we just sit back reflect and watch them form and go bye-bye.

(m)Y-Town Ohio Loves Them Some P-funk (2002)

Signs of P-funk in
my hometown
Youngstown (Ohio
funks da’best) circa
2002. This was
on the eastside,
I grew up on
the southside.

 Sometimes I wonder
why it’s in me
so deep and I
realize I was raised
on it. There is
a reason why the
Rock and Roll
Hall Of Fame
is in Ohio.

I want the Bomb,
I want the P-Funk…

Rainyday ramblings while dvd renders…

Its raining in Los Angeles for the 4th straight day. It has me in a mood, not a “bad” mood but a mellow sedate reflective one. One that is good for hibernating. Things are going well for me so to speak as “well” is very relative. Some people would surely say I was not doing well, even though I’m happy. Happy, yet not content. Which can be a good thing…

One cool thing I have verified is the quality of Sirrus Satelite Radio station “The Heat.” I had listened to it before when I had a rental and it was good, real good. I hadn’t heard quality R&B in so long I thought it did not exist anymore. Flowing, smooth, funky, syncopated, harmonized the way only black americans can do it. The key here is that the music is modern and being made by the “kids” of today. It has progressed as music should have from one era to the next and it feels up to date. Even the subject matter is a major improvement over what we call “mainstream” R&B.

I love me some Enterprise Rent-a-car. Walking distance from my house and $34 weekend (Fri-Sun) specials make my life so much more exciting and accessible. That and public transportation has been a pleasant lifestyle change. If only temporary.

Welcome to jefferyTV

WE WANT THE FUNK!! There are times when life gets going good and I get caught up in it and dont stop to write, film or document anything. That wouldn’t be such a “bad” thing except that I am supposed to be “jefferyTV” and I’m at events not writing about them. Especially P-funk events where I just loose my mind! It’s a very fine line between business and pleasure when dealing with the funk! ( a non-profit org). I say all that as pennance for all the funky events and happenings I wish I would have written about. One of which is the George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic show at Yoshi’s in San Francisco. Talk about a party!

Also I also was on the radio! KTYM AM 1460 in Inglewood, Ca.  Discussing atheism and religion in the black community with Dr. Sikivu Hutchinson. It was cool and I was eventually very comfortable being on the air.

George Clinton & P-Funk Do San Francisco

Yoshi’s Oakland March 2013

Having seen that P-funk thang over 100 times in different parts of this country (experiencing P-funk in Europe is one of my few remaining desires in life), I have learned to appreciate the differences each region brings. D.C. had groups of black males partying together in tight rhythmic bunches (here in California brothas  maintain personal space). I’ve watched the percentage of people who were actually on beat triple in the predominant young white Los Angeles audiences. I searched and found a “groove” I was looking for back where I came from.  Ohio is Bootsy, which is a key piece with Funkadelic that created Parliament, which is my musical highest. Ohio funks the best..

Yoshi’s Oakland March 2013

And San Francisco has its own very special thing. First off the city itself continously stimulates the senses with colors, sounds, smells, foods, views, visuals, eclectic political statements, etc, etc. The people there are intellectually  and physically warm and there’s a “commune – we sharin’ and all in this together” thing going on. Think Greatful Dead and when this meets that P-funk it’s a party like no other. Funk in psychadelic boas, wigs and big boots. And dont think those are just “costumes” folks throw on. There is a discipline and intregity to it. And I would be sir nosin’  if I didn’t at least cleverly hint at the best freely shared and abundant prop 19 stuff in the world.

What this city may lack in public displays of syncopated rhythms they more than make up for with hospitality that feels more like friendship. Its like everybody knows everybody and there is no such thing as a “stranger.” The vibe is literally groovy. The Spirituality is groovy. And it seems even the “bums” are intellectual. Weather changes hourly. The Bay is beautiful. The Bridge makes you proud to be human. Alcatraz, Fishermans Wharf, etc. And how could I forget the open sexuality?
