Last Combat Troops Leave Iraq

Keith Oberman interupted normal MSNBC programming with breaking news that the last combat troops were in the process of leaving Iraq. MSNBC’s exclusive coverage included Richard Engel who was embedded with troops in the final caravan.

50,000 personnel remain in Iraq in what is defined as the “Training” phase of the mission.  They are not intended for combat.

“NBC News: The last U.S. combat forces are about to cross the border into Kuwait, bringing to a close nearly 7½ years of a war that overthrew Saddam Hussein, forever defined the presidency of George W. Bush and left more than 4,400 American service members dead. ”

At roughly 7:19pm EST Keith Oberman noted the time when the embedded correspondent Richard Engel crossed the border and its symbolic importance.

CNN and FOX News lag in coverage of this event and did not report on it until 30 minutes after MSNBC. Rachel Maddow commented on how exclusive this assignment was for MSNBC.

Long Beach Funkfest 2010 Recap

jefferytv coverage of Long Beach Funkfest 2010 (August 8th) began upon our arrival around 12:15pm with the start of the Orgone set on the smaller Chico stage.  Fanny Franklin led a cover of  Funkadelic’s “Cosmic Slop” to close their set in tribute to P-Funk legend Garry Shider. Guitarist Arik Marshall was spotted in the early festival crowd.

The festival had 2 stages on the promenade amongst the many open businesses and vendor tables. But if there was an issue with this years event it would be the narrow path alley way between stages and lack of signs for direction. (I felt weird asking the events MC Vincent where the other stage was as he walked by). More than one music  promoter expressed concerns that guests would arrive at one stage when the crowd and entertainment was at the other and be unsatisfied. However this minor detail did not seem to diminish the large crowd or the mood of this event as it was packed and very joyous.

Rickey Vincent was the MC and kept things moving with his funktified crowd direction and tasteful commercial efforts.

The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown is a musical project which utilizes  musicians from many bands including  George Clinton & the P-Funk Allstars. Minutes after Orgone, they kicked it up on the Armarillo (main) stage with P-Funk Allstar Saxophonist Greg Thomas amongst the several horns. With Bobby Easton, the event’s originator and driving force, on guitar vocalists Rev. Desmond D’Angelo (The Soular System), Novena Carmel (Babystone), Patryce “Choc’let” Banks (Graham Central Station), Norwood Fisher (Fishbone, Trulio Disgracias) joined in to perform a rousing extended version of the Parliament’s “Testify.” A cover of The Soular System’s “Hot Sauce” was followed by Funkadelic’s “I Bet Ya” with Norwood Fisher on bass.  Patryce “Choc’let” Banks took the lead and the band really got it moving with a Graham Central Station hit. Novena Carmel also stepped forward to lead a spirited cover of  Sly Stone’s “Sing A Simple Song.”

Back to the Chico stage where Lonnie Marshall’s project LiL Big Ups opened the set for the Marshall led Weapon Of Choice which consisted of DeWayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight on guitar and Phillp “D” Fish on drums along with regular members Spankie Valentine, Elizabeth Lea and Mark Cross.   Norwood Fisher (the drummer’s brother) joined W.O.C.  and dropped a rap on “Count Mackuluv.” This ensembles version of the closer “Highperspice” was said to be as tight as “gnat booty.”

The Original Stone City Band took the main stage next taking no prisoners. With their lead singer from Youngstown, Oh who resembles the late Rick James down to the braids and mustache, the Buffalo crew performed Punk Funk classics “Give It To Me Baby,” “Mary Jane,” “You and I” and a very ballsy “Fire & Desire” which had comical crowd interaction as the singer searched for a female to serenade.  The female vocal of this song was left undone and this anthem was performed with much respect to those that came before it.  The lead singer “pulled it off” and this energy flowed right into the closing hit “Super Freak.” Though it was early, The Original Stone City Band left it tore up and the crowd screaming as a nice little message to the headliner.

Would “Punk Funk” turn out “P-Funk” and be the talk of LBFF 2010? With the P-Funk Allstars touring Europe can these P-Funk players hold their own with the “Ladies Of P-Funk” as headliners?

15+ hours of Funk at Long Beach Funkfest

The 2nd Annual Long Beach Funkfest ended this morning at 2am in the Rhythm Lounge, with a jam session that included Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain.” It began sum 15 hours earlier with Orgone featuring Fanny Franklin doing “Cosmic Slop.” The Ladies of P-Funk headlined and in true p-funk fashion came with the goods and turned it out. It was not an easy thing to do as The Original Stone City Band was taking no prisoners and brought Buffalo’s “Rick James” funk style to the festival as if the “Ladies of the Mary Jane Girls” was the headliner.

Greg Thomas, Norwood Fisher and Novena Carmel (among many many others to be noted later) sat in on an extended version of Parliament’s “Testify”  right after Orgone which set a nice funky foundation.

Much more in between but the true gem of the night was P-Funk. Considering that George Clinton and the P-funk Allstars are touring Europe right now, the “Mob” that showed up last night brought some real heat.  As if Mr. Dewayne Blackbyrd McKnight and Ms Dawn Silva wouldn’t.

Commentary, details, photos and video to come.

Ladies Of P-Funk rehearsal cellphone photo surfaces

A fuzzy cellhone  photo just received by jefferytv apparantly shows Ms Dawn Silva, Jeff Bunn, Barry Chenault and possibly Greg Thomas rehearsing. Another figure is can be made out but is too shadowy to identify.  The source did not reveal the exact Southern California location but confirmed the photo just recently taken. Missing from the photo was Blackbyrd McKnight, the other P-Funk alumni  slated to perform.

The musicans are in town rehearsing for the Long Beach Funkfest which takes place tomorrow and is free to the public.  The Ladies of P-Funk will headline this year’s event.

Ladies Of P-Funk Rumor Control: Greg Thomas

P-Funk Allstar Horn Greg Thomas

More speculation flew around the social networks this morning as Greg Thomas is rumored to also be joing the Ladies Of P-Funk set at the Long Beach Funkfest. Thomas, who resides in Los Angeles,  has 30+ years providing horns and vocals for George Clinton & The P-funk Allstars.

“Yeah, Mr Thomas has been singing the lead vocal on Knee Deep for years now, while also supporting other positions in the band” a source says. “Hell one time I think they were short on guitars and singers so Greg got like 19 solos and then sang lead. He is extremely versatile and I’ve seen him play just about every instrument there is!”

Greg Thomas Myspace
“Greg is a musician Whose talent is deeply rooted in African-American culture. Throughout the years he has learned how to perform all types of music from R&B to Hip-Hop,Acid Jazz to Blues to Gospel,Traditional Jazz,Rock n’Roll, to Polkas.However,Jazz-Funk is where his true love lies. Greg began playing music at the age of five, and his musical talents are diverse.”

One thing also notable about Mr Thomas is that he can instantly name the best places to eat in any city in America.

(What makes this rumor interesting is that George Clinton & The P-Funk Allstars are touring Europe right now!)

Jeff “Cherokee” Bunn of P-Funk fame leaves first Blog comment.

Shider sports Steelers cap with Cherokee Bunn

Bass player Jeff “Cherokee” Bunn is noted for his lavish Native American head dress while on stage with Parliament Funkadelic years back.  But today he is noted as the first external person to make a comment at the new jefferytv.com startup blog project.

“We are really excited about utilizing this free technology” says a jefferytv representative  who asked to remain unindentified. “We’ve had “blogs” for years and may have been the first one back in 1997 when the founder started ‘the dailys”‘ the source continues. It seems this may payoff for jefferytv as the organization intergrates its vast internet resources with todays technology and social networks.

Mr Bunn is playing this weekend at the Long Beach Funkfest with “The Ladies Of P-Funk” which is made up of original members (Bunn is an original member also) of “The Brides of Funkenstein” and “Parlet.” In his comment Mr. Bunn relayed that  “Its a love thang” and that they are bringing “Fresh vintage funk for the new world.” This response was to a post about his involvement in the Long Beach Funkfest.

Bunn’s Myspace
“As for me, born & raised B-more Maryland, (where you gotta Sho Nuff Bmore Carfeful) to music and beautiful women; a double blessing, a double challenge which I endeavor to live up to. Pops – a jazz musician/trombonist, Moms – an Indian beauty…”
-Jeff “Cherokee” Bunn

(Please note the founder of jefferytv is a huge life long fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and was blown away when he saw the above picture of Mr Garry Shider)
